Updated on March 26, 2025:

A bill that would allow Nevada colleges and universities to pay student-athletes was directly was heard in committee at the Nevada legislature Wednesday. Lawmakers did not vote on the measure yet as it is pending an amendment from the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Original story:

A bill introduced in the Nevada Legislature would clear the way for colleges and universities in the state to pay student-athletes directly.

SB 293, sponsored by Democrat Roberta Lange of Las Vegas, would remove language from existing state laws on name, image and likeness, or NIL, that prohibits direct payments from post-secondary institutions or a national college athletic associations.

That means schools like University of Nevada, Reno or UNLV can enter agreements with student-athletes for NIL compensation.

The new bill arrives as college sports appear headed toward a seismic change when it comes to revenue sharing.

A federal judge last year granted preliminary approval for a settlement in the case of House vs NCAA. The settlement means that if formally approved, players will be eligible to receive a share of revenue that schools generate through media rights agreements, sponsorships and ticket sales.

Stephanie Rempe, athletic director for the University of Nevada, Reno, told donors this week that her school opted into the settlement as well.

Andy Grossman, a spokesperson for UNLV Athletics, confirmed to our sister station News 3 that the school opted into the House settlement before the March 1 deadline. Further details would be provided once the settlement terms get final approval, he said.

Right now — boosters, companies and collectives pay student-athletes in Nevada.

There are currently no hearings or meetings scheduled for the bill.
