What is Ozempic?
Ozempic is a word that is being thrown around a lot right now, but what is it?
Ozempic is a medication that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 for people with Type 2 Diabetes. Its active ingredient is Semaglutide. The medication mimics a hormone (GLP-1) that that helps the body make more insulin, which decreases blood glucose levels. At certain amounts, Semaglutide can also interact with the brain to decrease appetite and increase feelings of fullness
Semaglutide Approvals
  • Semaglutide the the active ingredient in Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus.
  • Ozempic and Rybelsus are approved to lower blood sugar in patients with Type 2 Diabetes, while Wegovy is approved for people with weight related medical conditions to help lose weight.
Popularity Based Issues
  • Celebrities have been very outspoken about their praise of the drug not as a tool to help a medical need, but to its weight shedding ability.
  • Wegovy has been in a shortage due to demand since March of 2022. When a medication is in a shortage, the FDA allows compounding pharmacies to produce the drugs, however these do not have the same restrictions as drugs with an FDA approval.
  • Lack of these guidelines introduces safety concerns for those who are taking these drugs.
Side Effects
  • As any drug does, Ozempic has side effects such as nausea, and vomiting, abdominal pain.
  • While there is limited evidence, it has also been observed that there can be a significant loss of muscle mass due to the drug. Generally rapid weight loss does not just effect fat stores, muscle mass is also decreased.
  • Generally, rapid weight loss also decreases muscle mass.  Doctors and athletes should keep this in mind when looking at options for treatment of diabetes and weight loss.
  • Athletes should consult with a Registered Sports Dietician to make an action plan on how to accomplish their weight goals.
While Ozempic is not banned in sports, the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) has added it to their monitoring program. Always consult with a physician to weigh the pros and cons to any medication.
