SUMMER 2018 HHP 420 SPORTS LAW SYLLABUS SYNOPSIS

My name is Sean McAndrews and I am the Assistant AD for Compliance, Game Administration, and Adjunct Faculty member for HHP 420 and HHP 428.
The summer HHP 420 course is a web 100 course. The class covers Risk Management, General legal Terms, Sports law Issues, and NCAA/NAIA rules.
I am not on campus on Mondays or Fridays during the months of June or July... I am also taking my first vacation in 5 years next week - June 18 until June 22..
You will need the book. There will be a loaner book in the library.
All quizzes/assignments are available as of the 1st day of class. This class can be completed in 7-10 days if you start in the first week..

The quizzes cover one chapter or topic.
You get multiple times 3 or 4 times to take each quiz over 4 hour time period; Some quizzes take the average, Some go on highest grade.. In either case, you do not get the answer to the quiz until the course has ended.
There are 15 Quizzes and 4 assignments for a 490 total points. 
The class grading scale is based on 450 total points
This means 405 points out of the 490 is an A or 82% average on all work.
This means 360 points out of the 490 is a B or 73% average on all work.
This means 315 points out of the 490 is a C or 64% average on all work.
This means 270 points out of the 490 is a D or 55% average on all work.

PRINTED MATERIALS/ELECTRONIC MEDIA: NCAA Bylaws 13.4.1 and 13.4.2 (Printed and Electronic Media) may not be sent before June 15 immediately preceding the prospective student-athlete's junior year in high school

CONTACTS: NCAA Bylaw 13.1.6 there is no limitation on the number of in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts per prospective student-athlete. This applies to all prospective student-athlete's as of June 15 preceding their junior year in high school. There are still restrictions per Bylaw 13.1.7 at specified sites; Football and basketball can only contact during contact period.

TELEPHONE CALLS: NCAA Bylaw 13.1.3.1 Telephone calls to a prospective student-athlete [or the prospective student-athlete's relatives or legal guardian(s)] shall not be made before June 15 immediately preceding the prospective student-athlete's junior year in high school; thereafter, there shall be no limit on the number of telephone calls made by institutional staff members to a prospective student-athlete [or the prospective student-athlete's relatives or legal guardian(s)].

ELECTRONICALLY TRANSMISSIONS RULE: NCAA Bylaw 13.4.5 electronically transmitted correspondence (e.g., instant messaging, text messaging) shall not be sent to a prospective student-athlete [or the prospective student-athlete's relatives or legal guardian(s) and coaches] before June 15 immediately preceding the prospective student-athlete's junior year in high school. All electronically transmitted correspondence shall be sent directly to the prospective student-athlete [or the prospective student-athlete's relatives or legal guardian(s) and coaches] and shall be private between only the sender and recipient (e.g., no use of chat rooms, message boards, posts to "walls"). There shall be no limit on the number of electronic transmissions sent by institutional staff members to a prospective student-athlete [or the prospective student-athlete's relatives or legal guardian(s).  Color attachments may be included with electronically transmitted correspondence sent to a prospective student-athlete, provided the attachment does not include any animation, audio or video clips and there is no cost (e.g., subscription fee) associated with sending the item attached to the electronically transmitted correspondence.

Bylaw 13.5.2.1.1 OFFICIAL VISIT IN CONJUNCTION WITH CAMP/CLINICS – now illegal It is not permissible for an institution to pay any leg of a prospective student-athlete's transportation costs if he or she participates in an institutional camp or clinic in conjunction with an official visit.  (Adopted: 1/18/14 effective 6/15/14)

Bylaw 13.5.2.5 OFFICIAL VISIT ATHLETIC COMPETITION A prospective student-athlete may be transported to campus for an official visit from the site of his or her athletics competition or the reverse arrangement, provided only actual transportation expenses are paid and the cost of the transportation does not exceed the cost of transportation between the prospective student-athlete's home or educational institution and the institution's campus. Bylaw 13.5.2.6 FROM EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION: An institution may pay actual transportation costs for the prospective student-athlete to return to his or her home after an official visit that originated at the prospective student-athlete's educational institution, provided the cost of the transportation to the legal residence does not exceed the cost of transportation to the educational institution. Bylaw 13.6.1.2 FIRST OPPORTUNITY OFFICIAL VISIT: A prospective student-athlete may not be provided an expense-paid visit earlier than June 15 immediately preceding the prospective student-athlete's junior year in high school. [D] (Revised: 1/10/05, 6/22/11, 1/18/14 effective 6/15/14)


Bylaw 13.6.2.2 REQUIREMENTS FOR OFFICIAL VISIT – High School & Prep: An institution shall not provide an official visit to a high school or preparatory school prospective student-athlete until he or she: [D] (Adopted: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/92, Revised: 1/10/92, 1/16/93, 1/13/98, 4/29/04, 4/28/05, 1/9/06, 1/8/07 effective 8/1/07, 6/22/11)

(a) Presents the institution with a current high school or college-preparatory school transcript (official or unofficial);(Revised: 2/24/11, 1/18/14 effective 6/15/14)
(b) Registers with the NCAA Eligibility Center; and (Revised: 1/8/07 effective 8/1/07)
(c) Is placed on the institution's institutional request list (IRL) with the NCAA Eligibility Center. (Adopted: 1/8/07 effective 8/1/07)

Bylaw 13.6.2.2 REQUIREMENTS FOR OFFICIAL VISIT for 2yr & 4yr: An institution shall not provide an official visit to a two year or four year college prospective student-athlete until he or she has presented an Academic Transcript. A qualifier in his or her first semester or quarter at a two year or four year would be required to present a high school transcript. [D] (Adopted: 10/21/14)

Bylaw 13.6.6.7.1 MEALS ON OFFICIAL VISIT: An institution may provide the actual cost of meals on an official visit for a prospective student-athlete and the prospective student-athlete's relatives or legal guardian(s). [R] (Adopted: 1/10/92, Revised: 1/11/94 effective 8/1/94, 1/10/95 effective 8/1/95, 1/9/06, 4/11/06, 6/22/11, 1/18/14 effective 6/15/14)

Bylaw 17.1.6.2.6.1 SUMMER WORKOUTS LEGAL FALL SPORTS: In fall championship sports (including golf and tennis, for those institutions that conduct the championship segment during the fall), beginning June 1 through the conclusion of an institution's summer vacation period, a student-athlete may participate in workouts designed and conducted by the institution's strength and conditioning personnel, provided such workouts are voluntary and conducted at the request of the student-athlete. Strength and conditioning personnel who conduct such workouts must perform strength and conditioning duties for more than one of the institution's intercollegiate teams during the academic year, must be certified through a national strength and conditioning program and must maintain current certification in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automatic external defibrillator (AED) use. SUMMER WORKOUTS LEGAL INDIVIDUAL SPORTS – if the student requests: The Sports of Bowling, Cross Country, Golf, Gymnastics, Rifle, Swimming/Diving, and Tennis if the student requests in writing. The Coach has the student sign off requesting the summer workout.
