Daniel Furman on Instagram: "Olympic sports have been under the microscope in this new era of college athletics. I wish the scenario was different, but athletic departments are facing difficult decisions as they figure out how to navigate the financial challenges that revenue sharing brings. The reality is harsh: when revenue sharing kicks in, ADs are looking at every line item with a magnifying glass. Some schools are already making cuts. Others are scrambling to find creative funding solutions through donors and community partnerships. The question isn’t whether we want to keep these sports - of course we do. The question is how we make the math work when every dollar counts. #NIL #CollegeSports #RevenueShare"

👀 The NCAA is teaming up with platforms like Venmo and Teamworks to safeguard student-athletes and amplify their voices.

  • Plus: Research funding, career opportunities and a call for Hispanic Heritage Month submissions.

Let's dive in.

📱NCAA and Venmo unite against student-athlete harassment

Sports Betting

The NCAA has teamed up with Venmo to curb the harassment of student-athletes.

  • This collaboration includes increased protections for student-athletes on Venmo, including a dedicated abuse reporting hotline, best practices guide, account support and user education.

Why it matters: A recent study from the NCAA found that 12% of abusive content aimed at college athletes is linked to sports betting, with nearly 1 in 5 harassment cases in football involving betting-related abuse.

  • In some cases, sports fans and bettors will send unwanted payment requests to athletes after losing a bet placed on game performance.

What they're saying: "The harassment we are seeing across various online platforms is unacceptable, and we need fans to do better. We applaud Venmo for taking action, and we need more social media companies and online platforms to do the same. Several states have passed laws to crack down on this behavior to protect student-athletes, and we hope more do the same, because stopping this abuse requires action on multiple fronts," NCAA President Charlie Baker said.

What else: For additional support, student-athletes can reach out to ncaahotline@paypal.com.

👀 NCAA and Teamworks working together to amplify student-athlete voices

national office

NCAA Research and Teamworks have teamed up in a three-year agreement to distribute surveys that aim to elevate student-athlete voices.

Why it matters: Increasing student-athlete voices is at the forefront of NCAA efforts following the redesign of Division I governance, which highlights the importance of feedback from student-athletes and more than doubles their representation in committees

Dive deeper: Surveys will be distributed to Division I schools that opt in four to six times a year, focusing on topics relevant to the student-athlete experience.

  • Surveys will be distributed only to student-athletes at schools that opt-in to participate in each study, and survey participation will be voluntary.

  • Identifying information will be removed by Teamworks before responses are provided to the NCAA national office

What's next: The platform will initially serve Division I, with plans for expansion to Divisions II and III.

  • The first survey launches on Sept. 30, covering performance technology and well-being topics.

  • Research staff will continue to work with leadership in Divisions II and III to assist them in gathering student-athlete feedback through multiple channels.
