202324 NCAA D2 RULES EDUCATION SPORT SPECIFIC #02 - FB D1 FCS Playoff exception for 202324 season

D1 Football Exception to the Rule to know for when the FCS Recruit Calls

NCAA D1 Football, both levels FBS-FCS, already allow football students, Freshman-Sophomore-Junior-Senior-Graduate Student to play upto 4 games and not lose/use a season of competition.

The NCAA just gave a blanket waiver to FCS teams making the final 32 for the playoffs, that students who only play in only 4 regular season games, can play in the postseason and still retain the red shirt per the NCAA D1 bylaw.

So when looking at participation, look at the entire season, not just a total amount of games played, to determine seasons used.

Announcements - Oct 9, 2023

NCAA Division I Blanket Waiver Football Championship Subdivision Exempt Postseason Participation from Counting Toward Use of a Season of Competition Approved October 3, 2023.

At the request of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Oversight Committee, NCAA staff approved a blanket waiver request in championship subdivision football to exempt postseason participation (e.g., 2023-24 NCAA Division I Football Championship, 2023 Celebration Bowl) from the limit of four contests a student-athlete may participate in without using a season of competition.

In granting this request, the staff noted:

  1. The blanket waiver is applicable to postseason competition that occurs during the 2023-24 academic year;
  2. The recent adoption of the notification of transfer window and the necessity of accelerated discussions and decisions for student-athletes and coaches regarding future participation opportunities;
  3. The potential impact of student-athletes opting out of participation in postseason competition on participating football student-athletes; and
  4. The Football Championship Subdivision Oversight Committee agreed that the newly created Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision Oversight Committees will continue to review football's season of competition rule.

See Case No. 1204153 in Requests/Self-Reports Online via the search tab.  Additional information regarding blanket waivers can be found on the NCAA Division I Committee for Legislative Relief homepage.
